Nurses Completely Teaching about Healthcare. - International Nurses Association

Some nurses have the desire to be a nurse, yet they also want to teach. Some people may not realize there are plenty of jobs where you can do both.

College Teaching

Colleges that offer nursing degrees generally hire nurses to teach many of the required courses. Some do require nurse practitioners for teaching, however, some colleges are now using registered nurses to teach many of the classes. In order to teach nursing, one would need to have experience in a variety of areas, and preferably some experience with education as well. Many colleges have determined over the years that in order to properly teach a nurse, it actually takes a nurse that has been there and done much of what they are instructing the students to do registered nurses that instruct in colleges can offer hands on experience, along with tips, advice, and valuable experience.

Nursing Schools

There are technical schools now that are very common and they currently outnumber college classes for nursing students.  For each class of students, they require a qualified teacher, which is most cases is a registered nurse.  A nurse that has spent some time working in a hospital environment, makes a great teacher due to the fact they have hands on experience.  They can tell you what it is really like being a nurse, and offer enough insight that it can help to determine if a nursing career is right for you.

Educational Classes

Educational classes are very popular now and offered by many medical facilities. When a patient learns, they have diabetes, they need to be educated on the entire condition, and the process of properly treating it.  A nurse that has Knowledge in this particular area make a great educator. Marylin was a registered nurse and worked for a diabetic clinic for 21 years. She thought about retiring but instead decided to make a change and become a teacher.  She now works for s large hospital coordinating and teaching diabetic patients and their families. She feels as though she has the best of both worlds, she can still have use of her medical expertise, yet she can also fulfill her dream of being a teacher. Patients benefit greatly from her expertise on diabetes, and she loves her job that combines her medical knowledge with her love of teaching.

Nurse Educators in High Schools

Many school systems now employ nurses to educate students on many elements of health.

Sex education and health- this is usually a program that parents approve for their child to attend. The nurse educator will provide information on abstinence, as well as safe sex practices, and birth control.

Diet and Nutrition- this class is geared toward healthy eating habits.  This is a very important topic today with the obesity rate at an all-time high.

Body Image- this topic is taught by health professionals because it is very much a health topic. Young women, in particular, are often obsessed with body image, and health can suffer as a result.  As the nurse teaches this class, she tries to stress the importance of a realistic body and not one that some models present in magazines. This class often involves graphic photos of people that have starved themselves, so this is also a class that requires parental consent.

In addition, many companies now hire health educators to give speeches on the importance of good health.  Health departments in communities with a large population often hire educators to conduct classes on various health issues or concerns.
If you are a nurse and want to pursue teaching as well, combining the two is a great option that can be of great benefit to the general public.

Where do Registered Nurses Work?

Registered nurses are needed far and wide, and there dispersal amongst various facilities is illuminating.   Commonly, you associate nurses with hospitals, but their expertise is needed in a plethora of environments.   An overwhelming amount of nurses, (60% to be exact) operate in hospitals.   Comparing this percentage to the mere 5% working in nursing homes, RN’s have disseminated into non-governmental and EDU positions, as well as employment facilities and doctor’s offices.    Related : 2016 INTERNATIONAL NURSES ASSOCIATION (INA) SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Visit www.nurseadvisormagazine.com for more information on nursing. Top Diseases in 1917 – Top Diseases in 2017

1917 was just prior to the roaring 20s.  Unfortunately, the world’s population had been thinned out by 50 million people, all victims of the avian flu.  500 million people contracted this disease, which originated they believe in The United States, then spreading to France.  The death toll may be very much under-estimated, as South America and Asia were losing people so fast, they gave up on counting.  With World War I action, and this very deadly pandemic, the world's population was reduced dramatically.  This pandemic lasted through 1920 and was eventually called the Spanish Flu as it gained massive attention in Spain. Measles was in all the headlines in 1917.  Because of the very close quarters in the military, they were hit especially hard.  95,000 members of the military were infected with measles, leading to 3000 deaths. Perhaps surprising, sexually transmitted diseases were quite prominent in 1917.  Without the advantage of ant...

Organ Donations - Facts and Information

Organ donation is a very controversial subject to discuss with someone that has a loved one at the end of life, or that has recently passed.   Some family members consider it a violation of their family member, and that it is disrespectful to their loved one.   There needs to be a trained staff that can speak with the family members, and it needs to be handled in a very delicate manner.   In some cases the patient may have already made their wishes known for organ donation, and in many states this is an option on a driver's license. Nurses should be prepared to have this conversation at any given time with a family member.
