As a Nursing Student, what Extracurricular Activities are Beneficial?

We already had our time to treat the immense demanding curricula a nursing school provides. Nursing students are often familiarized with it at the very beginning of their journey. Information usually being provided is strictly covering what the school curricula involve. It does not provide hints on possible courses or extracurricular activities a nurse-to-be has to follow in order to get the most of his/her studying years. A nursing student might consider going for a nurse related extracurricular activity that will be efficient in terms of time management.

What might count as a productive extracurricular activity for a nursing student?

o     Initiating one or more community service projects
o     Job shadowing
o     Volunteer

Why should one consider these extracurricular activities once he or she is studying to become a nurse?

Well, first of all, nursing requires a lot of good will and dedication. It is that kind of profession you need to put all your physical and emotional efforts into action in order to excel in terms of human support and service. This is very important to be mentioned. Once you start your nursing studies you might not be properly aware of the Endeavour this job will require. Getting involved in these pre – professional engagements (extracurricular activities) might be a good and healthy method in order for you to become familiar on what it is expecting you during your professional engagement in the near future.
Secondly, once you get engaged into extracurricular activities as a nurse, you are practicing or at least getting hints and directions on how you will manage your professional activities in the near future.  For sure you will be practicing within your nursing course, but why not have a pre- rehearsal opportunity and serve the community as well?

We have been observing and asking many nursing students whether they ever engaged themselves into these extracurricular activities during the course of their studies and how the overall impact was. Their general feedback has been positive. Almost all of them report that nursing extracurricular activities did:
Support their general behavior amidst hospitals or health care centers
Improved their general time management abilities
Increased general knowledge on different topics in terms of nursing or medicine area
Taking the positive feedback into consideration, we advise nursing students to allocate time and energy for one of the main extracurricular activities mentioned at the very beginning of this article.

Initiating one or more community service projects

Usually, there are a lot of gaps of information in terms of health issues when you start asking and observing within the members of a community. There is a wide range of programs you might take into consideration to bring up in order to facilitate and improve your community information and awareness in regards to health issues such as:

o     Anemia symptoms
o     Blood pressure symptoms
o     Vision and hearing screening
o     Overall training on occupational health hazards (hospital or similar health care centers)
o     General information in regards to malicious health issues (different types of cancers, general information on prevention and possible screening)
o     Healthy nutrition diet presentation
o     General information on physical exercise benefits and proper weight level maintenance
o     Immunization methods and benefits
o     Drug awareness
o     Organization and leading of disaster drills
o     Drug recovery organizations and channels of communication
o     Sexually transmitted diseases
o     New parents orientation programmed
o     Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) information
o     Birth defects information
o     Risk of using steroids
o     Risks of being exposed into sexual abusing environments
o     Eating disorders
o     Preschoolers and students’ general information on health

As you can see from the above list there are a lot of programs you can be part as a future nurse. By getting engaged in these programs you can contribute with your knowledge in order to increase your community awareness on one or more of these areas of concern, and at the same time, you will have the opportunity to understand what being a nurse means. Continuous endless support to our community in need!

Job shadowing

Hospital offices are probably equipped with a Human Resources representative who is responsible to accept requests for employment or even job shadowing. In case you are a nursing student you might consider applying for a job shadowing position in one of the hospitals or health care centers near your residence territory.

Job shadowing implies that you will be assigned to a nurse. You will be following him/ her in each task performed within the shift. You will be there taking notes on what will be considered as new information and knowledge to you. Also, you will be frequently practicing or dealing with his/ her tasks into his/ her direct supervision. Job shadowing schedules might differ from program to program, but is generally conceptualized to be widen within the necessary time frame to observe and gain a basic set of skills that might help you during the first period of your future employment. Job shadowing supports a near practical insight of the duties you will be holding and completing once you will start your nursing professional career.

Job shadowing is one of the encouraged learn through practice methods that a nurse might apply as an extracurricular activity during his/ her nursing studies. It is also suggested since one might widen their sphere of acquaintances and influence that might support them at the moment when they will be holding their degree, ready for the employment moment.

Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the most important and beneficial instruments, a to-be nurse might take into consideration whenever looking for extracurricular activities during nursing studies. There a number of organizations that are already established within each city or district area. These organizations are always looking for individuals ready to contribute with their knowledge or specific abilities in a certain area of interest.

Once you have already started your nursing studies you are considered to have already been exposed to general information in regards to health conditions, maintenance and general security. Thus, you might find yourself able to contribute as a volunteer any time your studies are allowing you in terms of time constraints.

Volunteering might require you to get involved in a given health care centre or a specific community in order to support the already established staff with a range of tasks they are holding in order to support that group of individuals. This approach is highly suggested once you are about to start an extracurricular activity since it will increase your general awareness in terms of the good will and sacrifice you have to do when you will become a nurse in the near future.

The Bottom Line

Regardless of the extracurricular activity you will decide to choose during your nursing studies, the impact will be positive. You will be given the chance to contribute with all your individual and academic tools in order to facilitate and support, and in the meantime, you will widen your area of knowledge and your sphere of influence as well.

A nursing student’s approach to one of these extracurricular activities should always be a win – win approach.

Where do Registered Nurses Work?

Registered nurses are needed far and wide, and there dispersal amongst various facilities is illuminating.   Commonly, you associate nurses with hospitals, but their expertise is needed in a plethora of environments.   An overwhelming amount of nurses, (60% to be exact) operate in hospitals.   Comparing this percentage to the mere 5% working in nursing homes, RN’s have disseminated into non-governmental and EDU positions, as well as employment facilities and doctor’s offices.    Related : 2016 INTERNATIONAL NURSES ASSOCIATION (INA) SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Visit www.nurseadvisormagazine.com for more information on nursing. Insomnia in Nurses

The nursing profession has more workers suffering from insomnia than any profession overall.   It's really not surprising: rotating shifts, long hours, emotionally draining days or nights, and of course the pressure of not making a mistake. It all can take its toll, and that toll may be in the form of insomnia.   Insomnia Facts Do you ever look at s sleeping baby, and think about how you wish you could sleep like that?   Babies have no daily worries. Someone always cares for their needs, so their minds are not preoccupied with “what ifs”, or consumed with thoughts of everything that must be accomplished the following day.   No wonder we can't sleep!   One of the main reasons so many nurses suffer from insomnia is that it's difficult to essentially shut the mind down.   You can physically put your body to bed, however you cannot reach in the brain, flip a switch, and turn of the mind.   Think of it like this; you get a comfortable blanket and pillow however ins
