Happy Nurses Lead To Happy Patients

In the healthcare sector where in the quality of care is directly proportional to patient satisfaction, nurses play a very important role in keep up the metrics.  Nurses are healthcare providers working most closely with the patients, dealing with the physical, mental and emotional ailments of the patients and being by the side of the worried families.  They work day and night, standing on their feet for long hours and lifting heavy loads that eventually leads to their burnout and fatigue.

In any healthcare setup the nurses are at the forefront leading the hospital mission to reduce patient’s suffering and deliver constant care and support to ease the suffering.  The National database of nursing quality indicators provide continued evidences that show the relationship between quality nursing and patient outcomes.  The survey conducted includes participation from over 2,000 US hospitals and aims at measuring parameters like nursing quality, nurses job satisfaction levels, assessing the nurse work environment, assessing the staffing levels and improving reimbursements under current pay performance policies.

Hospitals that have higher number of satisfied nurses in turn have better patient satisfaction as happier nurses are able to pass on their satisfaction to the patients.  When the nurses get respected for their jobs from the health care setup, they feel more responsible towards their patients and they are able to engage with their patients better.

Nurses who are happy in their jobs are more found more attentive while on duty and the mistakes made are much lesser. which in turn improves their productivity.

Hospital business is growing competitive but more than facilities it is the employees working in these health care setups that win patient recommendations.  Since the patients are empowered with greater choices of investing in the hospital of their choice, the healthcare set ups that invest right in their employees tend to come out as winners.  As per a survey conducted, every 10% of the nurses reporting job dissatisfaction, costs the healthcare setup patient recommendations by 2%.

Technology can be used as a strength in creating a setup that focuses on its employees.  Systems should be implemented that create a positive working environment supporting learning for its employees.  Few ways of incorporating employee satisfaction through technology include self scheduling, increased productivity and data driven staffing.

In other words health care setups that focus on their nurses giving them a conducive work environment are likely to experience: a substantial increase in the quality of care offered by the nurses; increase in nurse retention; increase in more number of nurses willing to join the hospital. Since, happy nurses result in happy patients it is important that healthcare setups pay attention to minute details that can better the life of the nurses working in the hospital resulting in better levels of satisfaction.

Phones Can Be A Haven For Germs Yes, it’s gross, but that little device that you cannot live without, would probably make you sick if you saw it under a microscope.   Think of how many times a day you place that phone in your hand.   It’s a safe bet that you pick up your phone more often than you wash your hands.   Whatever is on your hand at the moment you touch that phone, is now on your phone, and it's not going away until it is sanitized.   It's hard to believe, but ma...

Top Diseases in 1917 – Top Diseases in 2017

1917 was just prior to the roaring 20s.  Unfortunately, the world’s population had been thinned out by 50 million people, all victims of the avian flu.  500 million people contracted this disease, which originated they believe in The United States, then spreading to France.  The death toll may be very much under-estimated, as South America and Asia were losing people so fast, they gave up on counting.  With World War I action, and this very deadly pandemic, the world's population was reduced dramatically.  This pandemic lasted through 1920 and was eventually called the Spanish Flu as it gained massive attention in Spain. Measles was in all the headlines in 1917.  Because of the very close quarters in the military, they were hit especially hard.  95,000 members of the military were infected with measles, leading to 3000 deaths. Perhaps surprising, sexually transmitted diseases were quite prominent in 1917.  Without the advantage of ant...
