Studying is hard work. When it comes to studying for the dreaded NCLEX,
it is a battle. There is so much to study and so much to remember that it can
be pretty overwhelming. Where do you even begin to go about studying for this
crucial test?
Hatching a plan for reviewing for the test is not a hard as you might
think, but it still takes a little elbow grease. There is an entirely different
approach that you can adopt to studying if your tactics have been less than
helpful for this test. There is no need to drown yourself in notes and books
when it can be so much easier.
The following are a few ways to make yourself study that might not be so
conventional. They do not really have anything to do with studying itself! Try
them out and see if they work for you!

- Sleep
Getting the sleep you need is important no matter
what is going on in your life. Unless your basic needs are met, you will not be
at your best. In order to retain and even process all the information that you
are throwing at it, your brain needs sleep. If you have to choose between sleep
and reading that last chapter, choose sleep. Your brain will be foggy the next
day if you do not, and you will not be able to keep up with all of your hard
work.
- Visualize
By imagining yourself as an RN (or in whichever career path you choose
to take), you will be helping yourself to actualize your goals. Reminding
yourself of why you are putting yourself through all of this is a powerful
thing to use as motivation. By putting your heart into it, you can make it
happen.
- Hobbies
Finding a new hobby might be the last thing that seems like a good idea
at a time like this. However, giving yourself a fond memory to mix with the
stress of studying for your exam will really help. With positive reinforcements
sewn in throughout your day, your studying will go much more smoothly.
- Stop Studying
An excellent way to make yourself study is to… stop studying? That’s
right. Take a breather and work on some other things. For example, if you are
suffering from anxiety, take some time to deal with that. Avoid information
overload and take some pressure off of yourself. Do not be afraid to take a
week or so off of studying to give yourself this much needed break.
- Face Fears
By doing exam drills, you are taking your fear of the test head on.
There are programs that you can download to simulate the actual test. Follow
the test to a T, taking the breaks and everything, and you will be more than
ready to face it.
Regardless of where you are in your studying, it can be easy to take
some time to make sure that you are mentally able to handle the impending test.
Allow yourself some time to relax and face your fears to best prepare. This
test is going to be a stressful thing to take, but taking the time to minimize
the stress that it brings just from the studying aspect of it is just as
important as studying for it.
