Organ Donations - Facts and Information

Organ donation is a very controversial subject to discuss with someone that has a loved one at the end of life, or that has recently passed.   Some family members consider it a violation of their family member, and that it is disrespectful to their loved one.   There needs to be a trained staff that can speak with the family members, and it needs to be handled in a very delicate manner.   In some cases the patient may have already made their wishes known for organ donation, and in many states this is an option on a driver's license. Nurses should be prepared to have this conversation at any given time with a family member. Related:   Get the Facts on Hospice Care If family members do opt to allow organ donation from their loved one, it's imperative to be respectful, and allow them time to compose themselves. If they need to say their goodbyes, permit some alone time.   Despite continuing efforts at public education, misconceptions and inaccuracies about donatio

What are the risk of Obesity? What are the Treatments?

At 11:00 pm on a Saturday night a 34 year old man was admitted to a hospital that was 4 miles from his home.   The man called 911 after not being able to get up from his sofa.   When arriving at the hospital and being weighed, it was determined the man weighed just over 800 pounds.   The hospital was far from equipped to handle someone of this size, but at the time, no other medical facility could take him.   Two regular beds were tied together until a specialty bed could be ordered.   It took 7 staff members to assist the patient in movement, as he was unable to get around at all on his own.   Related: How to Express a Complaint or Concern       This is a case that takes some very critical thinking outside the box. Medical Mysteries and Miracles

Medicine is primarily science, and most of the time, scientific facts guide patient care and treatment.   Medicine is now mapped to a science so that doctors can give a prognosis that is very accurate.    On occasion, something might be off.   Perhaps the doctor made an incorrect diagnosis?   Not in every case--in some cases, it is simply unexplainable. Read below to learn about a few medical mysteries. Fate? A retired gentleman 72 years of age was not ready to stop working.   His friend mentioned a part time job that involved letting medical students diagnose “pretend” conditions on you.   The man signed up and went to the hospital to start his new part time job.   He was a little nervous about the pretending to be sick, even at 72 years of age, as he was the picture of health, and has never been sick at all.   Once he was given his card of the day’s illness, he studied it, and went into action.   An aneurysm in the abdomen, he’d never even heard of it, but he could act.   As

Healthy Food & Drink Choices

Regardless of whether we are eating a meal at home, at a sit down restaurant, or at a fast food drive thru, there are healthy choices available.   The healthier choice may not always be obvious, but now there are requirements that nutrition information be available on all menu items.   As a nurse, you should maintain proper nutrition all day and every day. Breakfast Options When preparing for a day, it's vital that a healthy breakfast is part of the preparation.   Breakfast revs up the body for the day and gets the metabolism going.   Some healthy breakfast choices: Oatmeal is always a great option.   It adds fiber to keep you full, and has nutrition that a body needs to make it through the day.   Pair oatmeal with some blueberries and a cup of milk, and you has just done your body good. Eggs are a good source of protein.   They can be a healthy part of breakfast; it's often what is added to them that can make them a poor choice.   Many people cook their Egg
